Khimar is a head piece which often comes with tie back strings securing the abaya. It usually features a v-shape (sometimes u-shape) front and back. The back layer could be a single layer, double layer or even three layers.
They can be crafted in various different fabrics. They are very popular for Umrah/Hajj as well as the Ramadan period for Tarawee prayers.
Khimars can be paired with a matching abaya or if you are feeling different a totally different abaya.

Is Khimar same as Jilbab?
When it comes to modest fashion, the Khimar is a versatile and practical choice that has gained popularity for its ease of use and elegance. But what exactly is a Khimar, and how does it differ from a Jilbab? Let’s dive into these timeless pieces and explore why the Khimar might be the perfect addition to your wardrobe.
What is a Khimar?
A Khimar is a modest headpiece that drapes elegantly over the upper body, often complementing an abaya. It is designed with tie-back strings to secure it in place, making it a practical and comfortable option for women seeking modesty and elegance. The Khimar typically features a v-shape (or sometimes a u-shape) at the front and back, allowing for graceful movement and coverage.
The back layer of a Khimar can come in different variations:
- Single layer for a simple, lightweight look.
- Double layer for added volume and elegance.
- Three layers for a more luxurious and regal appearance.
Why Are Khimars Popular?
Khimars are especially popular during Umrah and Hajj seasons, as well as during Ramadan for nightly Taraweeh prayers. Their simplicity, combined with their practicality, makes them an ideal choice for women who prioritise ease and modesty during acts of worship.
They can be styled in various ways, pairing them with a matching abaya for a coordinated look, or experimenting with a contrasting abaya for a unique outfit. At Anaqa Inspired, we’ve curated Khimar sets to give you both comfort and style, especially during these spiritually significant times.
Khimar vs. Jilbab: What’s the Difference?
While both Khimars andJilbabs are staples of modest dressing, they are distinct in their design and purpose:
- A Jilbab is a one-piece outer garment that covers the body from head to toe. While Jilbabs offer excellent coverage, they can feel heavy and cumbersome, particularly when getting up from a seated position.
- A Khimar, on the other hand, is a two-piece set that includes a head covering and often a matching abaya. This design makes it lighter and less restrictive, giving you the freedom to move comfortably without the fabric pulling or getting in the way.
